S.C. release pushed back. It's all love though...

Yep! The S.C. Release has been pushed back to late July. I'll make sure to let everyone know the exact date and location though. I'm going to enjoy going home and acting up on stage for my folks. I haven't done a show in Columbia, S.C., where I'm from, in almost 5 years. I was still with my old group The Spades back then. Columbia aka The Metro or The Met is a small city. It's been tryin to get it's music and club scene poppin for a minute. It looks like they might finally have something going. We'll see. I hate to say it, but my city is known for being slow.
Most of you are probably much more familiar with Charlotte, N.C., which is almost an hour away from Columbia. Once upon a time, maybe in the early to mid 80's Columbia and Charlotte were neck and neck. They were rival cities especially because they were so close. Well in 2009 you can forget any kind of rivalry, at least between Columbia and Charlotte. Comparing Columbia to Charlotte is damn near like comparing Charlotte to New York, there is NO comparison. Charlotte shot passed Columbia somewhere around the early to mid 90's and never looked back. Though it may have a long way to go Charlotte is slowly joining the ranks of cities like Atlanta and Houston.
One thing I can tell you really hurt the growth of my city and state is that whole Confederate Flag bullshit. International companies make it a point NOT to deal with cities that are stuck in the past. South Carolina aka South Cak has been run by bigots for too long. Even after the death of one of this countries most powerful bigots Senator Strom Thurmond, bigot politicians have still run S.C. into the ground. This is one of the reasons teams like the Carolina Panthers ended up in North instead of South Carolina. Reference The Spades video, which is on this blog and at www.youtube.com/oprolific. We shot parts of that video during a rally to get the Confederate Flag taken off of the state house, while bigots stood 5 feet away shouting with confederate flags in their hands. Peep my song "Rise" too on iTunes and Amazon or wherever you can find it, where I reference the outcome of that battle. It's all love though. As an artist I use art to combat ignorants just as artists always have.

TO ALL MY FOLLOWERS

Whatup folks? Thanx to everyone who has commented on my posts and downloaded my latest album on the free download link. I know I've been ghost for a second. Haven't had the opportunity to gather my thoughts lately, at least not enough to formulate into a satisfactory blog. Anyway the EXCITING TIMES continue.
As you may or may not know, I was out in L.A. last month for business and relaxation. It was my first time on the left coast and I enjoy it a lot. Made some important relationships and just really enjoyed the trip. It didn't rain not 1 of the 10 days that I was there. I experienced Venice beach and Santa Monica almost everyday. Encountered some interesting people out on the beach. Of course we were all over. We hit spots in Beverly Hills, Downtown, Universal City. We plastered Ozy Reigns stickers all over the beach, Hollywood Blvd., Sunset Blvd. and in the Valley. So if you're in L.A. or will be soon keep an eye out. No light post street sign was safe lol. We actually stayed in Sherman Oaks which is in the Valley. Empress Journee, who is my business partner has family out there so they showed us around. Thanks again Dayo and Mike for the hospitality as well. Yall made that trip a lot easier for us no doubt.
I'm back in the A now though. Don't be surprised if I pop up in Hollywood again soon though. Cali is so laid-back. Folks is out there handlin business in flip flops and shorts for real. Since I've been back it's been non-stop though. Back to back shows in the A. Peace to the Atlanta Bench and the Apache Cafe for showin me love. Doing another release for EXCITING TIMES in my hometown Columbia, South Carolina at club HUSH on Saturday, June 13th. Joint is gonna be live. We'll be doing one in Charlotte, N.C. in July too so catch-up with us. And if for some reason you haven't checked one of the most acclaimed albums to hit the planet this year you foolin. Download the LP and please give me your feed-back. If you feelin it spread the word. Just wanted to let yall know I was back in the mix though. Thanks again for following my blog and those of you who I follow, it's for a reason. I enjoy all of your posts when I get to read them. By all means keep up with me daily @ www.twitter.com/OZYREIGNS.

God bless,
OZ

EXCITING TIMES is HERE!

Photobucket
Maybe you missed the livest show/party Atlanta has seen in months. Of course I'm gonna say it was live because it was my release party. But really doe, if it wasn't live I probably wouldn't blog about it. And if it wasn't live, I probably wouldn't be as confident about disclosing the names of witnesses to the event as I will shortly. All in all, EXCITING TIMES was dropped like an anvil on the melons of all in attendance. Let me first identify the producers that provided the foundations of the 19 or so songs on the LP. Illastrate
, D.R.UG.S., Amdex, Koda(Codafied)

Koda, Mr. Q, Jae Scott and Rock Most. Check for yourself. I don't work with wack producers. That's my word. All these dudes are on the verge in my eyes.

Illastrate and Mudnoc are the guys who helped make sure the songs sounded good. They mixed the tracks for me, a lot of it was on there own time so they really deserve praise for their work. They made me look really good on this one. Now the guest artists are as follows- Clan Destined
, Tori Alamaze, Nefarious, Tay, Dillon, Mojo Swagger, Naira, Boog Brown, Stanza, Dat Boy Tragic, Stahhr the Femcee, Dean Caine, Dynas, Akir and of course Binkis Recs. Yeah, a mouth full and they all did their thangs. Really really blessed the project. Oh! And look out for that Foolish remix featuring Senor Kaos as well. Nuttin but dat heat!

How can I forget Mr. Bret Boogie of iExist. He did the graphic design for the project. Every change I needed to be made he made em (no matter how last minute lol). He had my inserts done in time and everything. Bret is definitely one of the tippy top graphic designers in the A. We've done a lot of work together and I know we'll do more. Likewise about my man EDS. He designed my logo and our Moondox logo. Dude is sick with the graphic work. He's out of Indiana, they keep him busy up there, but he also took the time to craft exactly what I needed.

Can't forget my cousin SinSkyy
and my brother Nefarious for helping me out with all the running around that I have to do on a daily basis, but especially during the preparation for this project. I don't know what I'd do without them. My girl Isis Wisdom took the cover pic for the album. I definitely appreciate her continued support. My man DJ Aaries is always on deck to help me promote and interject new ideas. My peoples Donnie and Redd from Pyramid Pictures have been down since our Clark Atlanta days. They shot the "OZ" video and have helped me with my image. Stay-tuned for the new videos as well. Mojo Swagger is my dude for life too. Him pulling me in to do this show at the Bench couldn't have turned out better. He really went in on the promotions and just supported my project all the way around. Mojo is definitely one of the most talented artist/promoters I've ever witnessed.

Last but not least my business partner Empress Journee out of Charlotte, N.C. As always she made sure that people knew about this project and helped me in any capacity I needed. She's actually responsible for me having this blog. I can't say enough about Journee. She keeps me on my toes and is always motivated in helping me push my career to the next level. I made a vow to keep my self around people who were driven. People who make moves. Journee is definitely one of those people. You'll be hearing a lot more about her if she stays on this path too.

Most of these folks made it out to the show where they could cop the 1st copies of EXCITING TIMES. Journees cousin Era hooked up the bangin pasta salad and cheese dip. The entire Atlanta underground scene was in the building fo sho! Performances by Spree Wilson, Binkis Recs, Stahhr, Dillon , Clan Destined , Nairaand myself made the night memorable.
And we gone do it again soon!
Don't miss it.

To Grandma, Unc Curtis and JAX -LOST BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

Right now I have to acknowledge the memories of the people who inspired me to keep pushin to the finish line with this project and life in general. My Grandma Lowery, who passed just 4 days before I dropped EXCITING TIMES was definitely with me in spirit on Friday, March 6th. She was just 1 month shy of her 84th birthday when she passed after years of struggling with diabetes. My grandmother had been living with my mother in South Carolina for about a year, so I had gotten to see her every time I went home. She always asked me how my music was going and encouraged me to pray and keep working toward my goals. The woman who gave my mother life and who I spent all of my childhood summers with is gone. My grandmother lived a long life though. She leaves a long legacy as well with 9 children, over 20 grand-children and over 20 great-grand-children to carry on what she's taught us. It's been kinda hard to take in, but it comforts me to know that she is no longer suffering. I love you Grandma and we miss you very much.

My Uncle Curtis, who was killed in a car accident last year is another source of inspiration in my life. I travel to Charlotte, N.C. a lot for shows and he was among the family that I have there. I just remember him as a positive person. He was always smiling or laughing about something. My earliest memory of him is riding horseback with him when my grandparents still had live-stock on there property, back in Eutawville,S.C. As I got older he was one of the men in my family that mirrored qualities of the man that I wanted to be. Uncle Curtis took care of his family by any means necessary. He was never in trouble with the law and was always respectful. And like my grandmother he was very interested in my aspirations as an entertainer. I would often stay with him and his family when I came to Charlotte for music. It was a shock to hear of his accident. He was only 44 years old. You can never prepare for the death of a relative or friend, especially a good person such as my uncle. Uncle Curtis you can be sure that your widow, your children and and grand-children will be taken care of if I have anything to do with it.

JAX aka Chistopher Thurston was a staple in the Atlanta Hip Hop scene. He was the leader of the Atlanta based group Binkis Recs. I first encountered JAX around 99-2000 while he was working at Fat Beats record store during it's brief stint in the A. I would later encounter him again at underground spots like the Somber Reptile and MJQ. Being new to Atlanta at that time I always admired out-of-towners who came to this city and made a name for themselves. I was determined to do the same. I'm sure the other members of Binkis, Flux and Killa Kalm as well as JAX realize there influence in the A and if they don't I'll let them know. Myself and most other up and coming artists in the city looked up to Binkis. They were one of those groups that always had new music on the underground stations, they toured over-seas with big name groups like Tribe, they always had something new coming out and just stayed grindin. JAX did so many collabs it's not even funny. When he took it upon himself to come to me personally to let me know he enjoyed my music a couple years back after hearing The Last Dragon it was kinda crazy to me. From that point we had planned on working together and it was finally beginning to materialize when he unexpected passed away last November. He passed out during a performance. JAX lived the music and he died doing the music. You inspired me while you were alive and you inspire me in the after-life big bro. To my grandma, uncle and to JAX. You are all sorely missed, but you'll never be forgotten.

HIP HOPS LIFE after DEATH

I thought I might let everyone know that my last post was actually a post from a 2006 blog I did. I found it interesting reading an almost 3 year old post and realizing how much my feelings haven't changed. Ohhh, but have no fear the resurrection is very near. You can feel it in the air. The culture is awakening. If you don't feel that way I advise you to dig a little deeper into the digital crates and look-up some artists who are consistently putting good shit out. Myself Photobucket for instance, who you can now download on iTunes. Good music is not only out there, but it is indeed coming back to the mainstream full force not just in tiny intervals. We have more control over our art now and we are gaining more control by the minute. I'm excited about the digital age. And though, like everything it comes with it's downfalls such as beat auctions, which I think takes the producer artist relationship out of it, the digital age is mostly a major plus. No more having to sign 360 deals, basically allowing a huge company to anally rape you out of your royalties and dough. What I have envisioned is a situation where we'll have the creativity of the early 90's and the entrepreneurship of the new millennium in a cohesive state. Stay-tuned.

Why Hip Hop is Dead.

Before you get all defensive and start replying with mindless rants, check my reasoning. As you all should know, Nas has a new album dropping entitled "Hip Hop Is Dead." Yeah I'm an up and coming MC in the game, who has been a Nas fan for a long-time. That has nothing to do with why I agree. No I'm not going to stop making my music. It would take a whole lot more than a hip hop great saying hip hop is dead to make me hang up my mic. I've been frustrated with the lack of creativity in music in general for many years now. People listen much more closley to how your beats bang or who's producing your tracks nowadays instead of listening for substance in your lyrics. So the majority of "artists" don't feel they have to put any effort into making music that means something. And producers get top dollar for wack stripped down tracks that have no musical value other than to get that ass movin on the dance-floor. I like all types of music. But when everything starts sounding, looking, acting, smelling or feeling the same, you better believe death is in the air. Hip Hop has to die to be reborn as something better. And personally I'd like to be apart of a new movement. Not one that has lost it's flare and has forgotten the whole reason that it even came about. Everybody's beefin because hip hop started in New York but it's now much more alive in the South right now. Fuck all that! Hip Hop is for the universe. I think alot of legitamate artists as well as the fly by night garbage artists are truly on some bullshit right now. One of the main reasons Hip Hop is dead is because the artists that were holding it up just forgot what making quality music was. They didn't step it up and they stopped putting out good shit. Now they're mad that the next generation doesn't know who they are and what good music is. It's partially your fault. Yeah big business too. Big business likes to come in and fuck up what began as a pure form of expression. Fuck that too though. We are more in control of our art than we've ever been. It's time to step this whole shit up. Make quality shit and get paid.

Last Word on Dilla

I discovered Dilla in the odd way that many of us discovered Dilla. We found out that many of our favorite Hip Hop joints had been produced or co-produced by him. "Stakes is High," "Runnin" and "Got til It's Gone" were favorites of mine long before I knew who Dilla was. The dude had magic. Aint no other way to explain how he single-handedly elevated the game. He was a mixture of Hip-Hops greatest producers. Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Q-Tip. He even had some Prince and Quincy Jones up in there. Dilla could do anything and he did. Nobody could make music with so much soul but so much thump at the same time. Dilla made you feel it in ya spirit and in ya chest. He had a way of taking you to another world. When you have the guys that you've idolized for years, trying to do what you do you've made it. Dilla was a genius. A genius that many are STILL trying to figure out and emulate. He took you to where ever he wanted to take you. From the club, to your car to outer-space. Dude made a life-time of music in such a short span. Dilla didn't even get to see the level of respect and fame that he should have, but he has a faithful cult following. I can say that I share a deep love for this music with Dilla. He actually made me realize that if I dig deep enough I really can affect peoples lives with my music by giving them the deepest part of me.

(The following are not my words, rather they are the words of Minister Server a friend of mine and leader in the Temple of Hip Hop with KRS-ONE. I'll do this from time to time, but only with really important posts such as this one.)

FEBRUARY 2009 "FOOD FOR THE SPIRIT"

Peace and much love! The divinity in me salutes the divinity in you, word!

The spiritual gift for the month of FEBRUARY is LOVE! The word LOVE is probably one of the most misunderstood words in our modern vocabulary. Most people confuse LOVE with emotionalism, infatuation or material wants. I won’t go into a long list, however, if you listen to or watch mainstream media, you’ll hear a lot of people saying and doing some strange things in the name of “LOVE”! However, your spiritual gift of LOVE gives you the ability to go beyond your personal feelings, thoughts and emotions to allow you to experience a higher consciousness. It is written that, "God is LOVE", we believe this to be true. God lives within you so there’s never a need to look for LOVE; you are a living manifestation of LOVE! Unfortunately, most people never experience this powerful gift because they have not learned how to LOVE themselves, which is truly the basis for loving anything. Some people have only experienced LOVE on a limited level because they have placed conditions on how they choose to experience LOVE. For example, in relationships people will threaten to hold back their LOVE if the other person doesn’t say, act or do the things they want them to do, and that is not LOVE! LOVE is the unconditional principle that allows you to connect to the oneness of God, which is the underlying energy of all creation. It is written that you should, "LOVE God with all your heart, your soul and your mind and you should LOVE your neighbor as you LOVE yourself". Most of us are still working on doing that, especially the second part! It’s all good, as you to learn to LOVE yourself like God loves you, it becomes easier to share that LOVE with all of creation on a daily basis! God loves you so much, that there is nothing you can do to stop God from loving you, even when you don’t LOVE yourself! That’s unconditional LOVE! It may seem impossible for you to LOVE like that, however, you are a child of God and if it’s true of God, it’s true of you too!

We all desire LOVE in our lives, it gives our lives more meaning and yet, loving someone unconditionally doesn’t mean letting them to take advantage of you or treating you wrong. It simply means that them to be who they are without judgment. Sometimes you have to LOVE people from a distance, everyone doesn’t deserve a “front seat” in your everyday life, be honest with yourself about how you choose to use your LOVE!

Your spiritual gift of LOVE gives an inner peace that will allow you to experience the life you were born to live and fulfill your divine purpose! In the challenging times we are living in, we must remember that LOVE is the most healing, powerful and harmonizing force in the universe; we should use it daily and share it with all of creation! It is true, you let It be and there It is, word! Photobucket

My Thoughts on J Dilla

Photobucket
Let this day be a reminder that no matter how much of a genius you are. No matter how many lives you change. No matter how hard you work, this journey called life on earth will be over for us all one day. So we gotta ride it til the wheels fall off. Music hasn't been the same in these past few years without Dilla. He left a permanent imprint in music. What will people remember you for?

EXCITING TIMES & mo!

Whatup folks? Wanted to give you guys an update on what's going on with me and the music. As you can see from the pics, we began shooting a music video Photobucket this passed weekend. It went pretty well. I want to thank everyone who showed up for there cameos and if you didn't you will have a second chance this weekend hopefully. Donnie Leapheart of Pyramid Pictures Photobucket is directing the video for me of course. The video is for a song that I have featuring Naira and produced by Amdex of Clan DestinedPhotobucket . It's called "Sun Among Stars" and it's some beautiful shit. Some of you may know, that I have a new project called "Exciting Times" that I'll be releasing on March 6th. This song does not appear on it, as it will appear on my following project of the same name "Sun Among Stars." I'm an Independent Artist, I can do dat. LOL.
"Exciting Times" is my street album and will feature some of my favorite independent talents such as Illastrate
Photobucket , Clan Destined, Binkis Recs, Mojo SwaggerPhotobucket , Nefarious Photobucket, SinSkyy, Rock Most, Boog Brwn, Stahhr, D.R.U.G.S. and many mo. You're gonna get a full serving of what Ozy Reigns and the Atlanta Hip-Hop community has to offer. Feel free to check me on the iTunes. Google the kid if you want. Look forward to a plethora of hot shit and I'm gonna look forward to providing it.

Peace,
OZ

How I maintain.

Want to know how I maintain? It's the same way that most successful people do. I keep a positive outlook on life and stay focused on what I am trying to accomplish from day to day. A lot of people you know are raining on your parade and they may not even realize it. The bottom line is you're letting them. So stop it. Make good thought-out decisions and be confident in them. It's not easy to be a trendsetter or a visionary. You have to learn to say "FUCK EM." If they don't enhance your life in anyway say "FUCK EM." Haters don't have shit going in life so they don't want anyone else to either. Even some of your "friends" throw salt sometimes. If you care about them, call them on it. Ain't no room for constant negativity in my circle for real. Anyone who wants to fuck with me on any level needs to make note of that.Photobucket

OZY REIGNS stars in "OZ"

Produced by Illastrate and Jay Fab, Directed by Donnie Leapheart

OZY REIGNS & INDY (The SPADES) -"Incredible S.C." - Unreleased album coming soon!

Ozy Reigns

Ozy Reigns has blazed a musical path that stretches from his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia where he attended College. It was also in Atlanta that Ozy met up with talented producers such as Illastrate and Koda to begin molding a unique sound for himself. It was by Koda and Illa’s beat ingenuity that the foundations for Ozy’s high-powered tracks “OZ,” “Staywitchu,” “ALB” and “FireFly” were laid. “ I make music for music lovers. I wanna take Hip Hop music beyond where it’s ever gone and replenish the edge and the soul that it had before it was a billion dollar industry,” says Ozy. Between show dates and radio airplay in S.C., N.C. and ATL, Ozy and Jus Cuz(Nefarious and SinSkyy) with their label MOONDOX, Ltd.(est. in 2002) maintain a growing buzz.

As an individual Ozy will conquer not only the music industry but the world of film as well. He studied film at Clark Atlanta University following a note worthy history in the drama program at Richland Northeast High school back in South Carolina. During and since college, Ozy has acted in, written, directed and composed music for several projects. Some of which can be found at video stores nationwide. Excelling in multiple arts, including music production, he can only be labeled an artist. From his first rolls in grade school plays, to leading songs in the church choir, and local club performances around Columbia and Atlanta, Ozy has stayed on it. In his own words “Me and my fam have starved long enough. I gotta feed generations with my raps so in my eyes I gotta blow! No question!”

In any crowd, Ozy stands out like a sore thumb. Maybe it’s because of his laser beam focus on his goals, which was evident in the communications department at Clark Atlanta. Ozy was a 4-year member and eventually became president of 4-Reel Productions, a popular film organization at the university. Success through leadership has always been in the cards for him. Even as a 4-year old belting out his own renditions of hits by Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5, and New Edition Ozy, or Corey Gillens as his parents named him, knew his destiny. His quote worthy lyrics give him a presence that is rare in today’s beat driven market and the soul that he brings to the game is paralleled by none. After the huge success of The Spade’s South Carolina hit “Incredible SC,” Ozy prepares his yet untitled solo debut album. With several projects in the works, and “The Last Dragon” mixtape, hosted by Hood Hard’s DJ Aaries, smashing the streets he will solidify himself as a music legend and further secure that his destiny will be fulfilled.
